"The greatest piano soloist that I've ever heard in my life, a Cuban cross between Thelonius Monk and Felix the Cat". The quote is from Ry Cooder, and it faithfully sums up the great gentleman Rubén González.
Gonzalez got his start with the jazz orchestras of the 1940s and went on to accompany all the great musicians in Cuba. But he waited until the age of 77 to cut his first solo album. More astonishing yet, he'd already been retired for several years and didn't even have a piano any more - his old instrument had fallen apart, eaten away by worms and time. But if you go through one of Havana's big hotels, you might see his elongated silhouette suspended over the keyboard, absent from the world and totally absorbed in his music.

Question : Sur le CD "Introducing.. ruben Gonzales", le morceau 6 "Siboney" comporte plusieurs phrases qui ressemblent à certaines jouées par Art Tatum en 1944 dans "Dark Eyes". art Tatum fait-il partie des influences de R Gonzales ?
